One of Vancouver’s most precious offerings is its stunning natural environment. Forests, beaches, and surrounding mountains are an inspiration for many artists. My studio was near forest trails and the beach and I found a synergy between my nature walks and my creative expression. I began making hand-built vessels that were painted with a fine clay coloured slip and fired in sawdust. The marriage between the hand of the maker and the unpredictability of the fire drew me in to more explorations and interpretations. There was something deeply satisfying about acknowledging the connection between the earth I walked on and the earth I handled.
Although I’ve transitioned to working with photographs, clay remains my first home and I go back to it regularly to re-discover the tactile pleasure and versatility that is unique to the medium.
